In Every Frame.
For our most recent photography project we had to photograph using a model, at night time, in a “surveillance” style (sneeking around and looking suspicious).
I used my friend Kay as my model.
Most people shot their images in a ‘dirty’ style, including suspicious characters that were “chavvy” drug dealing types. I didn’t want mine to be the same as that so I dressed Kay up to look quite innocent, with a dress on, a bow in her hair and even a lollipop!

”- Shaky, bumpy or raising/lowering motion of the bikes rear end created by the impact of acceleration and then fed back into the bike’s frame caused by a shaft drive. It’s quite normal as that’s what Shaft drives do as the gears inside the drive want to “ride up” as they are under stress (acceleration).”

Nerves.
This is a Zine that tell you a story about a certain persons life and they seem to go on an emotional journey through the Zine.
The actual content of this Zine is relevant to my work exactly, although I could choose to go in that direction with my work, following the personal life of one of the female bikers. But I think that would be too personal for me to create about another person.
Anyway!.. My Zine is supposed to have some kind of narrative in a similar way to this one. I like the layout of this Zine aswell and the way that the text is placed over the images. However, it doesn’t look very handmade or roughly put together (which is how most Zines usually look), it looks like it was all created on screen which I would prefer to do but I don’t think that is what my lecturers are looking for from this project.

Light up the Darkness features a selection of collective thinking from a disparate group of philosophers, comedians and fictional TV characters.

This is a Zine produced by one of my lecturers. Its entirely just text, no images. I love using text on its own, I think its a really brave move and something I will experiment with when developing my own Zine.

AWoL.
These are pages I’ve scanned in from an old motorcycle magazine called ‘AWoL’.
It ran from the mid 80’s all the way through the 90’s but hasn’t been seen for nearly 10 years now.
I’m aware that this isn’t a ‘Zine’ but a lot of its layouts and its style was similar to a Zine. It was quite an underground magazine and was quite rebellious.
It looks like a cheap magazine, slightly amateur and as it is mostly black and white and the photo’s look as though their placement haven’t been thought about, looks like it could have been photocopied and quickly thrown together.
It was designed for a bit of fun, the way they have drawn over photographs and written speech bubbles etc. is very similar to a lot of Zines and is very helpful towards my project.

The first of these images is the front cover of a Zine by Mike O’Meally which is about skateboarding and photographs of skateboarding.

The second is by Peter Nolan Smith. they clearly both have a very similar style and I really like the idea of photocopying blocks of paper with printed text, onto the images. It gives the Zine a grunge look and makes it look like an underground Zine.

So, my main project at university for the next five or six weeks is to create a ‘Zine’.
If you are unfamiliar with this term, by Wikipedia’s definition, a Zine is;
“(an abbreviation of the word fanzine, or magazine; pronounced ‘Zeen’) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier.”

Our Zine’s are based on a particular community which we have researched, my community is Motorcycle Clubs.

After doing some research on Zines, I have found a few examples which really interest me. These images are from a Zine about “sleepers”, basically, people who fall asleep in random places around cities. It was created by Rick Charnoski and mainly contains photographs which he has then drawn over or manipulated with pen.
I really like this idea, its simple, it means I can use photography and it gives the Zine its signature cheap, amateur look.

These are a small selection of images I was asked to take for a university project about ‘Beauty’.
The project was simply to take photographs of things that I consider to be beautiful and as two of my favourite things are nature/ the outdoors and old/ traditional buildings these are the main things I shot. I’m really happy with the outcome of my photographs, I think the angles and the lighting are great. I chose to take my photographs just before sunset so that the sun was low in the sky and gave soft, natural lighting.

Type Tart Cards.
This project asked for me to design a “Tart Card” for a particular font or letter of the alphabet.
I chose the font ‘Orator’ as it was one I had no experience of using myself and it didn’t look very familiar, meaning it wasn’t used very often, so I felt it needed a bit of advertising.
If you are unfamiliar with Tart Cards, they are the means by which London prostitutes advertise their services.
I had to create this Type Tart Card to make my font appealing to others.
I think in a way it was very successful, I was particularly proud of the strap line
“She’ll treat you Orator she’ll treat you very badly.”
I felt it was really clever because some people won’t necessarily understand the use of the word ‘Orator’ in this sense. In some parts of the UK the word ‘Alright’ is pronounced ‘Orate’ and so it basically means ‘Alright or’.
I’m happy with the clean cut, modern look of the card and the colour scheme works really well, its quite elegant and very feminine.
However, most of the other Tart Card designs included a cheeky image/ illustration which added to them and definitely made them look more like ‘Tart Cards’ which I don’t think is clear when you look at my design.
